Which one do you prefer?

Last week I had the pleasure of taking a pastel workshop with Liz Haywood-Sullivan, PSA. I really enjoyed it and she's a very good painter and instructor. We had a very nice and talented group of artists from the Austin Pastel Society. Using the same photo reference, on one day we did a painting on a black surface and the next day we used a white surface with a washed (alcohol) underpainting.  Neither of them is finished. But which one do you prefer?

I think I like the "wash" underpainting better. But in both of them I'm really not fond of the diagonal "path" juxtaposed against the furrows. Maybe just personal preference?

Ahhh! They are not "furrows" but shadows of the tree trunks, which does not change the substance of my previous comment.

Bob, I wasn't sure of the path either, but the instructor really like it (composition wise) because it "cuts" the big space of shadows and make that space more interesting.

Hard choice. They have such different moods. Both are really interesting. I think I'd choose the bottom painting because of the wonderful colors you used in the foliage. But I like both and I like comparing the two. Nice job, Johanne.

I really liked both of them, Johanne. I think the first one appealed to me the most, as I liked the dark background and the light. Great job!

Thanks Virginia and Regina for visiting and giving your preference. My preference keep changing,... I may have to finish them or start them over...

I liked the second one better, although they are both beautiful.
