Memory of a house - SOLD

Here's a commission I had the pleasure to work on recently for the mother of a former neighbor. This was her parents' house that she sold not too long ago. She had very fond memories of it. She provided the reference picture (below). She wanted green grass and the tree. And she really liked the porch with the detailed glass... Those were my "instructions".

I changed the composition to give more front yard (with green grass), and preserved the lower branches of the tree. The size of the painting restricted me from adding details in the glass. To make it more inviting, I changed the pattern of the light on the house and in the grass to direct the viewer to the front door.

I assumed the tree would be more challenging than painting the grass,... but I was so wrong. I had so much fun painting the branches and the leaves of the tree (with a palette knife)... the grass was another story: I struggled with the perspective and the pattern of the shade and light in the grass. I practiced on another piece quite a few times until I was satisfied with it.

I'm happy that I was allowed to be involved with preserving a wonderful memory. Apparently the new owner has cut down the tree and removed the enclosed porch.

How wonderful that you were able to paint the house with the tree and porch still intact. It is a lovely painting--very inviting;it looks like a house that would be nice to live in.

Very nice, Johanne. You did an amazing job to get so much onto an 8 x 10 canvas. Just beautiful and a lovely memory.
